Chapter IV
Mariam’s father Jalil would visit them every Thursday. He always dressed in a suit with necktie, his moustache was trimmed, and his nails were well-manicured. Mariam loved her father so much, that before Thursday she was always restless and fretting whether her father was prevented by those business entanglements. Jalil would take Mariam to fish in the stream, taught her how to cast her line, to gut a trout and how to lift the meat off the bone. Jalil told her Afghanistan was no longer a monarchy but a republic country. Jalil would bring Mariam some small gift, like candy and pendant. Mariam dreamed of brewing tea for her father, shopping with him in the vaulted bazaar and went out on his Buick.

Chapter III
Mariam’s brothers will use a wheelbarrow to send those rations to Nana, but Nana always yelled at them or even worse threw walnut size rock at those boys. Once Mariam wanted to plead Nana, she called her brother a lizard-ass face, she felt shame later. Nana taught Mariam a lot of living skills, such as kneading dough, stewing turnip with cauliflower and ginger, putting on the toppings and sewing. Mariam’s tutor was a gaunt and stooping old man. He would come to their house once a week and taught Mariam to read Koran and write words. This old man had a white beard that dropped to his navel. Mariam and her tutor liked to stroll in the clearing. Once Mariam told her tutor that she wanted to go to school, but her request was refused by her mother, Nana. Nana thought those children in school would laugh at Mariam and treated her as a spittoon.

Chapter II
Obviously, Mariam loved her father. Though her mother, Nana, had told her a lot of immoral things that her father had done to herself and his own daughter, Mariam still believed her beloved papa was dear and kind to her. The description of Nana’s first wedding and the symptoms of her illness are vivid, such as throttling her from inside, the froth at the corner of her mouth, white, and sometimes pink with blood. Names of different kinds of trees appeared in the book, like willow, poplar, tuberose and grove. The name of fish, trout, is also new to me.

Topics of A Thousand Splendid Suns (Part One) 1.

chapter 1.Mariam lived with her mother named Nana in the country of Kolba. Mariam is a harami, that is, a bastard. Her father Jalil is a rich business man in Herat. He owned a cinema, land, three carpet stores, a clothing shop and a black 1956 Buick Roadmaster. Nana was once a housekeeper of Jalil, when her belly bagan to swell, she was sent off with disgace to Iran. Therefore, she hated Jalil and his family, though Jalil always came to see his daugther Mariam, she felt unhappy. This feeling can be inferred from the discription, that when Jalil told Mariam that his cinema would give free ice creams to kids from the concession stand, Nana was smiling demurely and then asked Mariam what she has got excluding a storey of ice cream. The beginning of the novel is quite good, just a description of Mariam. Mariam was waiting her father coming from the clearing, and when the porcelain was slipped to the wooden floorboards and shatterd, Mariam was blame to destroy this chinese tea-set which is Nana's heirloom from her mother. The word "bastard" appeared here at the first time, and offered background information abour Mariam. The description of the porcelain was very lively, for example, its color was blue and white and the pot's spout had a graceful curve, the hand was painted chrysanthemums, and the dragon on the bowl was used to ward off evil. The language is also very sophiscated, like scurrying cockroaches, the cradle of Persian culture, the famous minarets of Queen Shad, and the vines pregnant with plump grapes, and also the vaulted bazzar, trellised ceilingand a face-saving deal.

The unethical abuses of nuclear reactions
Nuclear technology is useful in providing large amounts of energy, and the nuclear reaction won’t give out carbon dioxide like burning fossil fuel and coal. However, unethical abuse of nuclear power will cause serious results. If the nuclear power is used in military actions, the radiation of those atoms will cause permanent damage to creatures and environment. In order to minimize the potential unethical abuses, the usage of nuclear reaction must be limited in providing energy and doing research. The limitation could be guaranteed by keeping the method of producing large scale nuclear reaction. Once the scientific theory of nuclear action is controlled by government, the dangerous of radiation pollution and nuclear attack will be minimized. Another way to decrease the abuses of nuclear power is to control the reaction materials. One good example is the American National Standard for Methods of Nuclear Material Control -- Measurement Control Program, this program aims at controlling the raw materials which can produce large scale nuclear reaction. Moreover, this program also regulates the market of raw nuclear materials. It helps limiting the usage of nuclear power. Fortunately, due to the complexity of the equipments and materials of nuclear reaction, it is not easy to do the large scale nuclear reaction. That is also why there are only some countries can build nuclear reaction station.

Writing difficulties of engineering class

Writing difficulties of engineering class
Actually, the writing assignment of engineering class is quite hard for me. I found it was difficult to write my understanding in an academic essay. Once I was trying to express my ideas, I could not make it clear and accurate without copying the original sentences from books. During my bridging course, I have taken one chemistry module cm1501 and it required me to write an essay about protein structure and the usage of catalyst. In order to express the concepts accurately, I have borrowed a lot of books from library. However, after reading those materials, I felt that those explanations on the book were so perfect. If I wanted to paraphrase the paragraph and changed the words, I would change the meaning. Then I realized that if I copied those sentences, it was plagiarism. The problem was serious and I went to ask my tutor for help. The tutor suggested me taking the concepts from those books, but not copying the ideas. At last, I rewrote my ideas of the topic and integrated my ideas with those concepts and figures on the book. The result was better than I have expected. However, in fact, it was not a good academic essay. When I finished this module, I found that if I could put more diagrams, examples and mathematical proving in my essay, it would be more accurate and clear. From this module, I got the conclusion that a good academic essay required my own ideas about the topic, and it also needed a lot of examples, definitions and other scientists’research to make the essay convincible. Those stated above are what I am striving for. Moreover, I will work hard on my language. Sometimes my expression sounds quite weired due to the direction translation from chinese meaning. If I can enlarge my vocabulary and write in proper stucture, I can express my opinions accurately.

summary of Depleted Uranium

There is a controversial report written by two researchers stating that uranium scattered in the former war zones could cause cancer and other health problems. Many researchers and campaigners are convinced by this opinion. But government and the military strongly disagree with the report. Some organizations also call for studies to clarify the link between uranium and ill effects. Now two researchers, Chris Busby and Ewald Schnug, claim that depleted uranium will cause genetic damage to people’s body. Subsequently, they put forward a new theory called “phantom radiation”, which can invoke a well-known process called the photoelectric effect. Moreover, they have done various studies to show that dissolved uranium can cause damage to genetic materials. But responses to this theory are quite different. Some people have positive ideas towards Busy’s statements, such as Robin Forrest at the Uk Atomic Energy Authority in Culham. He hoped that the organizations charged with radiological protection could investigate this further. On the other hand, organizations like New Scientist, Ministry of Defence and the Health Protection are against this theory. These organizations said that they had no plans to investigate Busby’s hypothesis. Now Busby is working with Vyvyan Howard at the University of Ulster on testing the damage to DNA under different gamma radiation and uranium concentration. He believed that this theory could be proved by detailed attention. It seems that the arguments over uranium would continue for a long time. Whatever the outcome will be, investigating it will help scientists clear a lot of doubts about this mysterious substance.

Nowadays engineering is not restricted in architecture or manufacturing, it has become the tool of diverse fields. Science is one of the most related fields of engineering. According to the claims of the article-Engineer the tools of scientific discoveries, engineering assists to explore the discoveries of biochemistry in the form of new microscopes and new biochemical methods. What’s more, engineering enterprises are crucial to improve the quality of long distance human space flight. Science needs engineering to be its material support and regards it as an adequate tool. Engineering is not only important in the scientific field, but also essential in making new energy-solar energy. “Engineers find ways to improve the efficiency of the cells and to lower their manufacturing costs,” stated in the article Make solar energy economical. New technology of engineering helps to build solar cells which have low cost and high capacity. It also improves the efficiency of solar energy absorption. With the help of new equipments, solar energy will gradually take the place of fossils. Besides making new energy, engineering also plays an important role in securing information system. There exists a new model called role-based access control (RBAC) model.( Role engineering of information systemPoniszewska-Maranda, A.) It is developed for the role engineering in the security of information system. This model is designed by computing engineers to control the access to the information system. It is classified as a key to the information base and also has the function of blocking rubbish information. Computing engineering becomes a useful tool in the information field. The world of engineering is expanding. Our society needs engineering to design and create new things. Engineering is now a widely used tool in diverse fields.
